Incidentally, I have found out that the direct train from Budleigh Salterton to Cleethorpes ran via the Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway – Templecombe, Shepton Mallet, Bath – which is yet another closed railway line, famous for a Manchester-Bournemouth train called the Pines Express.

1. Obviously leaving sunny Sidmouth at all is questionably sane at best.

Not so much madness as simply having a bit of time on your hands, maybe. And maybe The Shirehorses had a friend to pick up in Budleigh, who was going to do most of the driving, that’d be a good reason to go through Budleigh.
I mean, they never sang “Budleigh’s on the shortest possible route to Scotland, as certified by my in-car navigation system and a long night of cumbersome mathematical calculations”. And not just because that didn’t scan. Wikipedians should think twice about taking song lyrics at face value, slapping TRUE and FALSE stickers on them as if they were statements of fact.
Really.

Going past Budleigh is hardly the same as going *to* Budleigh, now is it? You might as well say Budleigh is on the way to Exeter if you’re starting from Sidmouth. Which would obviously be madness.

Well, the French are people too! :)
And what if you live in Exmouth, and want to avoid the M5? You’d have to go past Budleigh on your way to Sidbury, and on to Honiton. Aha!

One more for the pedantic:
Budleigh [i]s only a few miles east of Exmouth, but there’s no train going there, so we had to wait for someone with a car to take us there.

“Someone” = a bus driver? You have heard of this new-fangled omnibus phenomenon? They’re a bit like trains, but they drive on the road like cars?

It’s Newton Pop, I’m afraid, at least among the locals, though of course that shouldn’t stop anyone from calling the place New Pop. Though a location less in tune with ABC – The Associates – The Fire Engines I couldn’t imagine. Even the pubs are bad, it’s a hang-out-by-the-bus-stop kind of town.

For Budleigh to be on the way to Scotland, you would have to be in, or across, the English Channel.
